Blood Spots

Blood spots (haemangiomas) can be treated by SplashClinic nurses without surgery.

What are Blood Spots?

Blood Spots (also know as Campbell de Morgan spots) are bright red spots usually a couple of millimetres across, although they may grow to being half a centimetre. They are usually a very bright red and have a very clear margin. They should not be confused with thread veins or spider veins which have red streaky veins radiating away from them.

These “birthmarks” are quite common; around 10% of Australians have them, usually on the face or neck.

What causes Blood Spots?

Blood spots are an unusually large build up of blood vessels which sometimes appear as a flat or raised mark on the skin and are very close the surface, hence their bright red colour. Blood Spots usually develop on the skin as one gets older. They become more common and larger as you get older. They are often found on the chest, abdomen or arms. They can also be found on the back or on the neck.
